Is Daulton Wilson going to Wells Motorsports for 2026? I have no idea, but we'll connect a lot of internet dots today and let you decide. Plus Spire Motorsports is venturing in dirt racing in a big way, and we'll show you how Gio Scelzi is suddenly connected to the Lakers, the Dodgers, and the Cadillac Formula 1 team. Let's go!
It's Tuesday, October 28th, I'm Justin Fiedler. This is DIRTRACKR Daily presented by Kubota Genuine Parts.
You watch the races. You see the highlights. But what if you could actually go deeper on what's happening on the track — who's trending up, who's falling off, what young driver should we watch out for? That's where DIRTRACKR Plus comes in. It’s the most complete dirt racing analytics platform anywhere — more than 2,500 races of results, stats, and analytics from the biggest series in the country. World of Outlaws, USAC, High Limit, Lucas, Chili Bowl — it's all in there. It's the same data I use every single day to put these shows together, and you can use it too. Whether you're a hardcore fan, part of a race team, or someone who just wants to sound smarter at the track — Plus gives you the inside edge. Sign up for DIRTRACKR Plus at dirtrackr.com/getplus — $4.99 a month, or $49.99 a year. Cancel anytime. That's dirtrackr.com/getplus.
There are times when you see things online connected to race teams or drivers, and it opens the door for folks to start connecting dots. Certainly folks like me who run daily shows talking about racing. But also folks who are curious. It might be something for sale. Maybe something purchased. Follows or unfollows on social media. Shares of something. A photo posted. Or maybe some combination. Back at the Knoxville Nationals, right before we found out that Spencer Bayston was being released from the Meyers 14, all of a sudden all of his merchandise was on sale, and Meyers posted sprint car engines for sale. Social media lit up about a possible move coming, and it was eventually confirmed. There are other times where a merch trailer for sale might just mean an upgrade is coming. And we've seen some add disclaimers to posts to try and cut off any speculation. GR Smith's team comes to mind as a recent example of that. Back in August they posted two engines for sale, and the bottom of the post read quote "For the Rumor Mill Keyboard Warriors: Not selling out, New Engines ordered, Drake Troutman is and will continue to be the driver for the G.R. Smith Motorsports 22* now and in the future as we will remain commited to a national touring team" unquote. So even some recognize where we are as a dirt racing community. All of this windup brings me to yesterday afternoon when S&S Welding, that builds really freakin' nice toter home setups, made post about a new truck and trailer out the door. The new build is headed to Kentucky and Wells and Sons Motorsports. Wells the current builder of the Infinity dirt late model chassis, and the former home of Brandon Overton. Wells hasn't campaigned a car since Overton left, even though there were rumblings that Eric Wells might make a return to the seat in 2025. As far as I know, that hasn't happened. If we want to connect some dots here, I told you guys back on September 16th that one rumor I'd heard about Daulton Wilson's future was that he could be a candidate to drive for Wells if he ended up departing JRR. We obviously know now he's out and JRR and Josh Rice is in. Wilson has been running some races for Big Frog, but his future plans haven't been revealed yet. So is this the truck and trailer that Wells will use to take Wilson racing next year? I did have a message today asking about. I will admit though, one random rumor and a toter home Facebook post seem like they are pretty far apart dots to connect. That wouldn't normally be a strong enough connection to make me wonder. But there is one more piece here. Daulton Wilson's partner went ahead and shared that S&S post to her own Facebook followers. That feels like it brings the dots closer together. Now, I will concede maybe she just super digs a nice dirt late model setup. I mean, who doesn't? Or maybe she's hype for Wells to be getting a new ride. I'm hype for them too. But maybe, just maybe she's trying to tell us something. I don't have super good intel or sourcing about a Big Perm move to Wells, and I'll leave it to you to decide if these dots are close enough to make you wonder yourself. As much as it can suck, sometimes I really do like snooping around the internet though.
Moving on, I got tagged in a video this morning, that was a show clip from Door Bumper Clear. If you don't know, DBC is a Dirty Mo Media show where Freddie Kraft, Tommy Baldwin, and Karsyn Elledge talk NASCAR each week. Last week on their show, Karsyn brought up rumors of Spire Motorsports buying sprint cars. Spire has been in the news lately with changes to their Cup team and truck series operation. Freddie mentioned he'd heard about it, and then the conversation kind of moved on. You guys around here obviously know we've been talking about this Spire deal for quite a while, as all signs are pointing towards a Spire/Clauson Marshall situation for Gio Scelzi. Gio has been filling in for the injured Tyler Courtney in the 7BC since he departed KCP, but Spire has been making moves to start a new team for Scelzi next year. As we've talked about, it will likely run out of the Charlotte area, they've brought in Eric Prutzman to crew chief, and a full High Limit run is expected. Spire has either purchased or is leasing the franchise from Jason Meyers that the 14 car earned the past two seasons on tour. I've heard both things about the franchise acquisition, but my own thought is Meyers likely sold it to them, although if they said it was a lease deal I wouldn't be surprised. Spire showed up on the 7BC as a sponsor on the nose wing in May of 2024, and more recently, Spire partners have also been on the top wing of the 7BC all of 2025. I'll get back to that in a minute. I want to talk you guys through what all of this really means, because there are a lot of angles here. Spire Motorsports itself was started by Jeff Dickerson and TJ Puchyr, but these days is a subsidiary of TWG Global. TWG Global is a holding company run by a guy named Mark Walter, and TWG has all sorts of interesting companies and brands under it's umbrella. On the more boring side, they've got investment banking, insurance, and technology companies. But on the sports and entertainment side, TWG controls the Los Angeles Dodgers who are currently in the World Series. They also own Chelsea FC, the Los Angeles Lakers, the LA Sparks, and the Cadillac Formula 1 team. And then under the TWG Motorsports banner, they own Andretti Global, Walkinshaw Andretti down under, Wayne Taylor Racing in sports cars, and of course Spire Motorsports. A guy you'll see a lot around the motorsports stuff is Dan Towriss. He's been front and center on the F1 launch, and he's the CEO of TWG Motorsports. Towriss's fintech company Gainbridge is one I'm sure you've seen on many race cars, and going back to the 7BC, it's on the top wing. It's interesting that at this moment in time, with TWG in control of all the things it is, that they and Spire now have an interest in dirt racing. The sponsorship of the 7BC was a bit of a taste, and now they are taking things up a big notch. You have to wonder if the High Limit franchise system was a draw here. It's not NASCAR or F1 money by any stretch of the imagination, but things are moving in a better direction. I also want to point out that Spire's Cup driver Carson Hocevar was testing a dirt late model at Charlotte last week. His plan is to return to the Gateway Dirt Nationals in that car. And the late model he was driving and will drive was put together at the Spire shop. In his photos of the late model, you can see Spire's NASCAR trucks in the background. So Spire's interest in dirt racing goes beyond just a winged sprint car team with Gio Scelzi. I don't know when the announcement will come of Spire's plans for Gio for 2026, but any time between now and the PRI Show in December wouldn't shock me.
